In Syria, Damascus forces are reportedly preparing for a large-scale assault on the opposition-held countryside surrounding Aleppo. Reacting to the government’s planned offensive, opposition forces attacked a main highway linking Aleppo and Damascus in northern Syria attempting to cut off a major supply line for President Bashar al-Assad's forces in the region. In the meantime, while the U.S. confirmed their intention to provide support to the forces of the Syrian opposition, the Free Syrian Army and the armed faction Jabhat al-Nusra both warned that their fighters may start fighting Hezbollah inside Lebanon, a further indication that the Syrian conflict is increasingly spilling over into bordering states. According to last estimates, the number of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries is approaching 1.7 million.

In Philippines, heavy rains triggered by the Tropical Cyclone LEEPI, locally named EMONG, caused flooding in the province of Maguindanao, located in the southern Muslim island of Mindanao. Although information remains difficult to ascertain, an estimated 100,000 people have been affected in the Philippines while 2 are reported dead according to OCHA.

The monsoon has started 20 days in advance this year, severely hitting the State of Uttarakhand in northern India while also affecting neighboring western Nepal on 14-17 June. While numbers of affected are difficult ascertain, up to 1,000 people are feared dead in India where an estimated 100,000 people have already been evacuated. In Nepal, at least 44 people have been killed and 39,000 people have been affected by the floods.
